SECTION C

Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow.

Louise began to feel detached, as though she weren’t one of the three.
Although it was very dark, she could see quite plainly all of them sitting
there, sitting, waiting. Bruce was staring at his feet, irritated because they
weren’t carrying him out of this hole as they carried him out of most holes;
Jonathan was staring at the rock face opposite, having the patience to wait,
like the waiting for the growing of a tree. And the girl – who was herself –
was irritated as well as patient but grateful for these pictures that her mind
plucked like sound waves, out of darkness. It occurred to her that she should
write down what she saw and felt – write down this experience. Though they
might be going to die, this was an experience to living.
“It’s getting very stuffy,” said Bruce, and he coughed.
“Strike a match, Jonathan,” said Louise. “We’ve been here a long time – and
I can’t hear anything yet. Strike a match. Give us a look at ourselves, so that
we know we’ve not just turned into voices.”

5

Jonathan tried hard to strike a match. He struck three .. four .. five .. But
while they flickered into life, they died instantly, as though an invisible hand snuffed out the flare.
“That’s funny,” said Jonathan.
15

But they all knew what it meant. They were the youth of a gold-mining
district and even if there was hardly any mining done today, they had listened through the years to stories of the mines. They knew that the foul air –
or gas- was extinguishing the matches.
20
“Gas is seeping from somewhere,” Jonathan said stiffly. “The fall of the
earth has moved something – shut us in – but opened a pocket of bad air.” “How long … can we last…?” whispered Bruce.

25

“It’s hard to say. We don’t know for how long, or how fast, the gas has been coming through. But it’s pretty thick. There might not be enough time for anyone to find us and dig us out.” Louise said quietly, hardly believing herself.
“Carbon dioxide …” said Bruce, and his voice was as lazy and as
unbelieving as the girl’s

30

“Stand up! Get on your feet!” Jonathan suddenly ordered.”I know we can’t stand upright .. but the gas is heavier than the air and is thickest at ground
level. It pushes the air upward. Stand up!”
There were awkward movements as the three got to their feet. They stood quietly, half crouched or bent according to the height.

35

“We’ll have to try the other tunnel.” Louise said quietly.
“No, no!” Bruce jumped at once. “Jonathan tested part of it, remember! He found that it got almost too narrow for his body .. and the roof would fall.
I’m broader than Jonathan. I’d rather the gas. You go. I’ll stay. Gas is
painless – just like going to sleep.”

40

“We’re all going. You have to make a bid to live – as long as there’s a chance.”
“You will only get caught in there – jammed in there. Jammed! Think of it!” “We have to try it.” Louise sounded calmly. “I’ll start off. But I’ll stop, and
not move an inch, if you don’t follow, Bruce.”

45

She felt Bruce tremble and realized the magnitude of the decision she had forced upon him. She waited. “Now.” She said. “We can’t waste any more time.”
“It would be much easier if you would just go .. and leave me. I wouldn’t
mind ..you leaving me.” Bruce said, his voice tired.
Louise cried out. “I am waiting for you. We’re both waiting for you.”

50

10

Waiting for him! Waiting for him to decide between the gas – which was so much easier for him to face – or the chance in the tunnel. Nonetheless it was
a chance that these two were eager to take. With his face screwed wryly in
the tunnel, he knew he couldn’t deny Louise and Jonathan this chance.

55

11

 “Then .. start..” he said.
Louise began to crawl forward, trying to make no noise so that she could
hear that Bruce was following. They crawled into thick darkness but there
were no more matches struck. To see another match die would surely destroy what was left of their morale.

60

12

The second crawl along the dark wet passage, however, was quicker than the first. Bruce kept very close behind Louise, bumping her now and again, and then Jonathan. Behind them urging them on was the carbon dioxide. Or was
it with them all the way? Were they already breathing it in, poisoning their blood, filling their lungs dulling their brains with fumes so they could not see
or smell, until they slept and died, without knowing they were doing either?

65

13

Louise wouldn’t let herself think of the gas. She crawled on, heartening
herself with the thought that some fresh air must be coming in the hole
through which they hoped to escape. “I am turning..” Louise said over her shoulder to Bruce. “After three or four twists, we should see the opening ahead.” “Do you think it will be wide enough … for me to go through?”
There was already the beginning of hysteria in Bruce’s voice.
70
14

Louise was tempted to snap back, “How should I know!” But she managed
to say, “I’ll be ahead of you. I’ll be able to tell you.” She crawled on over
more and more stretches of wet mud, feeling the mud beginning to cake on
her. That was when her own hysteria came close to matching Bruce’s. she
kept going only because she was certain that when they rounded the next
bend, the speck of distant light would welcome them and beckon them and lead them. But when she turned the corner, she cried out in disappointment
and fear, “It’s gone! It’s not there! The opening .. it’s not there!”

75

80

15
And from far behind Bruce, very far it seemed, Jonathan spoke for the first time since they had set out, “That means it’s night, Louise. The sun’s gone.”
