INTRODUCTION AND HISTORY
Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA), or the Council of Trust for the People, an agency under the purview of the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development, was established on 1 March 1966 as a statutory body by an Act of Parliament as a result of the first Bumiputera Economic Congress resolution in 1965.
The Council is responsible for developing, encouraging, facilitating and fostering the economic and social development in the federation, particularly in rural areas.
ESTABLISHMENT OF MARA – A POEM
TRUST AND PASSION OF THE PEOPLE (25 YEARS OF MARA)
BY NATIONAL LAUREATE USMAN AWANG
Majlis Amanah Rakyat
A legend born
From the indignities suffered
In their homeland after a decade of independence
It began in the colonial times as
RIDA – Rural & Industrial Development Agency
A transparent effort by the British to deter
The people’s condemnation of colonialism
RIDA – came to life in 1953
When fired up nationalistic sentiments could not
Overwhelm the spirited independent people
The voices of the Bumiputera forcefully lamenting
Their glaring underdevelopment and impoverishment.
In the year nineteen sixty five
The first Bumiputera Economic Congress
Epitomised the keening of a race
We have an abundance of wealth
Why are we not doing anything?
While others are in the saddle
The people were appeased
Avowing a new vision
RIDA was put to rest
To make way for the new designate
The Council of Trust for Bumiputera
And now after 25 years
MARA has reached its milestone in maturity
Perhaps the time will come
The Bumiputera Economic Congress
In the 21st century vision
To review its effectiveness
In appeasing the FURY and carrying out the trust of the people.
