HALAL MART (Halmart)
Background
MARA Retail Development Programme: Halal Mart (Halmart) is a programme designed to empower halal mart operators through facilities that will help these Bumiputera companies become viable competitors to other hypermarkets as well as strengthen their position in retail industry.
Objectives
- To strengthen 10 convenient stores with Halal Mart concept to increase Bumiputera entrepreneur participation in retail industry and facilitate market access for food product manufacturers
- To assist product producers, especially Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to market their products as well as contribute to the increase in the percentage of Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
- To identify products that have the potential to be developed with standard certification for product quality improvement such as Halal, GMP, HACCP and so on.
- To Improve the company’s operational efficiency through the use of better and more effective systems.
Target Groups
Existing Convenient Store Operators:
- Have been in operation for more than a year
- A minimum of RM1 million annual sales
- Have been in operation for more than a year
- Business is registered under SSM
SME Product Manufacturers:
- Food and beverage products
- Attractive packaging concept, shape and size that meet the market needs
- Required information on every label that includes:
- Bar code
- Manufacturing and expiration dates
- Halal and other certifications (depending on Halal Mart requirements)
Outcome
Halal Mart Operators:
- Increase in sales by 20%
- Strengthening of 15 convenient stores with Halal Mart concept
- Business network growth through branch expansion
- Creation of jobs for the locals
Manufacturing Entrepreneurs:
- Increase in sales by 10-15%
- Expansion of market segment
- Marketing of at least 300 SKUs
